Pioneer Park Playground
Bettisworth North’s landscape architecture team is working with a team of Parks & Recreation staff and playground equipment manufacturers to plan and design a concept for a new inclusive, immersive playground in Fairbanks, Alaska at Pioneer Park. The 54,500 SF playground will be themed to reflect the major regions, natural features, attractions, cultures, languages, arts, traditions, and industries that shape the state of Alaska and represent this historical theme park.
The team began assisting the client with ideas and outreach help 8 years ago as volunteers through Leah’s inclusive play advocacy and fundraising efforts. This project started with a collaborative design charrette workshop with the client, including an educational session on how to design for inclusive play for kids of all abilities.
Special care is being taken to incorporate site design that allows for easy access to other areas of the park and parking. Added features include green infrastructure that will be incorporated as sensory nature play and educational opportunities.
